More blue light exposure – independent of age.

Research has shown that people of all ages are spending more time on digital devices. Besides facing potentially harmful blue light emitted by the sun, people also spend more time indoors where buildings are nowadays equipped with blue light-emitting LEDs.  This can cause digital eyestrain and affect sleep.

What is digital eyestrain?

Do customers need special computer lenses?

Your customers are often unaware of how frequently they look at screens during the day. In reality, they are constantly surrounded by light sources such as digital devices and LED lights that emit a disproportionate amount of blue light. Blue light tends to scatter throughout the vitreous humor when entering the eye, causing so-called “visual noise”.

Customers may perceive this as uncomfortable glare and a reduction in contrast perception. Additionally, blue light causes longitudinal aberrations that may lead to blurred images. This unfocused “visual noise” can contribute to visual discomfort and symptoms associated with digital eye strain.

Common symptoms of digital eye strain (DES) are:

  • headaches
  • blurred vision
  • dry or  burning  eyes

Fortunately, the typical symptoms can be alleviated with little effort. Those affected can try to reduce their screen time, and they can also wear glasses with blue light filtering lenses.

How does blue light affect sleep?

Blue light has a big influence on our sleep-wake cycle. This is because the visible light spectrum also contains blue light waves – and these help us stay awake and alert during the day.

As the sun sets, the lack of light signals the body to produce melatonin. This hormone is responsible for us getting tired and falling asleep. Blue light from smartphones or laptops for example, can interfere with the release of melatonin. As a result, this can often lead to problems falling asleep and sleeping through the night.  You can now prescribe high-quality blue light filtering lenses for your customers to filter that part of the blue light spectrum.

How do blue light filtering lenses work?

A portion of light emitted by the sun falls in the blue spectrum. Furthermore, almost all modern digital devices and LED bulbs also emit blue light. The human eye can’t block visible blue light, so over exposure can contribute to perceived eyestrain and blurred vision. Blue light filtering glasses can filter that part of the blue light spectrum that can potentially be harmful and irritating for your customer.

With blue light filtering lenses from ZEISS, you can help improve your customers’ overall quality of life.

ZEISS BlueGuard Lenses: The next generation of blue light filtering lenses

With previous products like the ZEISS BlueProtect coating, blue light filtering is achieved by applying a coating to the lens.

With BlueGuard® Lenses by ZEISS, blue light filtering properties are now an intrinsic part of the chemical make-up of the lens material. In addition to filtering the potentially harmful blue light from the sun, it also filters irritating digital blue light that may affect your customers’ eyes.
